Webster City Freeman
Webster City, Iowa
Wednesday, November 20, 1889Died at his home in Webster City, Iowa on Saturday evening, Nov. 10, 1889 of enlargement of the heart, Mr. Alonzo Thompson, aged 61 years.
Mr. Thompson was born in Cummington, Mass., and passed his early years upon a farm, engaging in that vocation until the gold excitement broke out in California, when he fell in with the famous pilgrimage of '49 and drifted with the excited crowds. Arriving in California he engaged in gold mining for about a year. Returning to Massachusetts he remained there till probably 1854, when he again sought the west. Locating at first in Cleveland, Ohio, he formed a business partnership with B.S. Mason and P.C. Babcock. Not remaining long in Cleveland, Mr. Thompson located in Webster City, July, 1855, and since that time, with occasional absences, he has made his home here. In this city he was married to Miss Margaret E. Meeks in 1857, who, with a son, Carey W. Thompson, still survive him.
Mr. Thompson was widely known and universally esteemed as one of the substantial citizens of Hamilton county. He was loved most by those who knew him best. As a neighbor he was considerate and kind. As a citizen he was thoughtful of the public good. As a friend he was generous and affectionate. In his home he gave and received the blessings of unstinted love. And now that his work is done and his last conflict ended, his memory has become an everlasting possession to his surviving friends, while his emancipated spirit has gone forward within the veil to participate in the joys and to understand the realities of that solemn and unspeakable estate.
The funeral services will be held at the family home this (Wednesday) afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Amos Crum.
