Waterloo, IowaServices for Derek were held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson. Words of comfort were provided by Pastor Charlene Wolfe of Hope United Methodist Parish in Cooper, IA. The casket bears were Justin Alliss, Mike Bolfik, Randy Frantz, Matthew Pegg, Timothy Thorpe, and Troy Zeleznik. The honorary casket bearers were Vincent Alliss, Joe Echelberg, Jimmy Echelberg, and Jay Echelberg. Music was provided by pianist Danille Curtis and soloist Gary Haupert. The songs were "Go Rest High On That Mountain" and "The Allen Jackson Song". Interment was at the Franklin Township Cemetery in Cooper. Following the service at the cemetery there was a time of fellowship and lunch at the Cooper United Methodist Church. Memorials are suggested to the Iowa Brain Injury Association 7025 Hickman Road Suite 7 Urbandale, IA 50322.
Derek Thomas Thorpe, son of Donald Thomas Thorpe and Dorothy Ann Stephan Thorpe, was born April 18, 1980 in Ames and died January 25, 2012 at the Harmony House Health Care at the age of 31. Derek had an inquisitive mind since he was little. His parents often called him "MacGyver" because he liked to tinker and invent things. Derek was an excellent roller hockey player. He was medalist at nationals and was voted Most Valuable Goalie at a tournament. He also enjoyed Little League and helping out with the lighting for the Theatre Department. As a junior at Jefferson Scranton High school, Derek passed the entrance exam to Brown Institute in Minneapolis, MN on the first try. Derek worked in Des Moines for Computer Renaissance and taught computers at Jefferson High School through DMACC. Derek assisted in the dietary department at the County Care Facility where he enjoyed playing checkers and pool with the residents. He was an excellent checker player even after his brain injury on July 6, 2000. He received care at a facility in Sioux City and at Harmony House in Waterloo.
Derek was preceded in death by his sister Carrie Ann Thorpe, his grandparents: Donald L. and Vida Thorpe, and Bill and Zeffie Stephan. He will be lovingly remembered by his parents Tom and Dorothy of Scranton, his brother Troy (Kelsey Hostetler) of rural Jefferson; aunts: Connie Pegg (Ed) of Adel, IA; Merry Alliss (Donald) of Adel, IA; Janet Fetters of Ft. Dodge, IA; Kathryn Huntley of Ogden, IA; uncles Fred Thorpe (Tonya) of Jefferson, IA; and Darrel Stephan of Jefferson, IA. Derek is also remembered by cousins and many friends.
