This community was shocked by the sudden death of Robert Clayton which occurred Sunday night at the Hamburg Hospital. He had taken suddenly ill Saturday and was rushed to the Hamburg Hospital that evening and underwent an operation for strangulated hernia and had apparently survived the operation, when complications set in Sunday evening and with his advanced age and weakened condition he was unable to win the fight for his life.

John Robert Clayton was born February 10, 1857, at Linden, Atchison County, Missouri, and died at the Hamburg Hospital Sunday, June 23, 1929, aged 72 years 4 months and 13 days. His parents were Stephen and Elizabeth Clayton.

On March 24, 1880, he was married to Clara Carmen and to this union three children were born; Ralph and Earl, of Hamburg, and one daughter, Mrs. Esther McKissick, of St. Joseph, who passed away July 17, 1928. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife; two sons; one grandson, Robbie/Bobbie McKissick; one brother, Charles M, of Hamburg; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Morrow, of Los Angeles, California.

Mr. Clayton spent his entire life in Atchison and Fremont counties and for a number of years has lived on his farm in Atchison County, a few miles southeast of Hamburg. Last year the family moved to Hamburg and were making their home at t his place at the time of his demise. He was of a quiet disposition and had many fast friends here; he was known for honesty in all of his dealings and as a neighbor he was beloved by all. The family have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.

Funeral services were held at the house on Bluff Street, Tuesday afternoon, June 26, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. D.W. Griffith, assisted by Rev. John Zuck. The funeral was largely attended. Interment was made in the Hamburg Cemetery.
