Many in this community were saddened last week by the news of the death of Rev. J. O. Staples, pastor of the Hamburg church and a well known, former pastor of the First Baptist church of this city who passed away at the Northwest Baptist hospital in St. Paul, MN, August 9th following an operation. The news of his death came as a shock to all of his acquaintances throughout this part of the state in as much as even the few who had known of his going to the hospital had not realized that the operation was of a serious nature.
The "Hamburg Reporter" in its last issue said Rev. Staples has served the Baptist church here for the past five years and endeared himself to a large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was a capable organizer and all departments of the church flourished under his direction. Mr. Staples was especially efficient as a worker among the young people and did much good in the community in juvenile activities.
The body was taken to Webster City, Iowa, for burial and services were conducted there on Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. At the same hour memorial services were held at the Baptist church here in honor of his memory.
