Jeanne Shuck, 81, of Milford, formerly of Sioux City, died suddenly Thursday, March 24, 2005, in Las Vegas, Nev.
Services will be 11 a.m. today at Turner Funeral Home in Milford. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery in Sioux City.
Jeanne Beverly Shuck was born Dec. 8, 1923, in Sioux City, the only child of Esther Anderson and Gerhard Thorson. She spent her youth in Chicago, Emerson, Neb., and Sioux City. Following graduation from East High School in Sioux City in 1941, she attended Wayne State University in Wayne, Neb.
In 1941, she spied a handsome farm boy named Joe Shuck at a New Year's Eve dance, and they were married on July 18, 1942.
Jeanne worked at home sewing, cooking and cleaning until the baby of the six kids started kindergarten in 1968. Between Jeanne's knack for pinching pennies and Joe's carpentry skills, they were able to build a vacation home on Terrace Park at West Lake Okoboji, Iowa. In 1971, they made the lake their permanent home. Jeanne worked as a waitress before she and eldest daughter, Carole, combined their talents in 1977 to open the now-legendary Mrs. Lady's Mexican restaurant in Arnolds Park, Iowa. Hard work and perseverence paid off making the business her proudest accomplishment.
The 50-year marriage of Jeanne and Joe endured separation during World War II, ulcers, work-related injuries, six kids and the normal tragedies and triumphs of most marriages. They were true companions. Joe and Jeanne enjoyed their "retirement" working at Mrs. Lady's, daily Scrabble matches, spending evening at the "bank" with their pals and taking frequent trips to Las Vegas.
Jeanne enjoyed any game of chance, but especially loved blackjack. She had a quick wit and sharp tongue and took immense pleasure in joking and bantering with anyone within earshot. Jeanne remained mentally sharp and fiercely independent until the day she died.
Left to cherish her memory are a son and his wife, John and Tina (Wendy and Jesse) Shuck of Sioux City; five daughters, Carole (Joshua and Olga) Hinders of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Christine (Jade, Ivy and Roy) Maris of Rochester, N.Y., Anita and Blair (Amber and Gina) Bailey of Spencer, Iowa, Tracy Shuck and David Tvedte (Mark) of Spirit Lake and Dolores Shuck of Spencer; five great-grandchildren; five nephews and their families; and a sister-in-law, Irene Shuck of Onawa, Iowa. Many friends, employees and business associates will miss her as well.
