Funeral services were held for Hazel Herbert, 81, on Monday, Aug. 18, 1980, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Lake Park with Rev. Michael Biklen officiating.
Hazel Emaline Miles was born to John David Miles and Katie Dell Miles at Kirkman, Iowa on March 8, 1900. She attended school in Kirkman, graduating in 1918. Hazel taught school in surrounding communities for several years. On July 2, 1925 she was united in marriage to Robert Scott Herbert at Storm Lake, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Robert of Lake Park and Donna Greenwood of Des Moines.
The Herberts lived on a farm near Mitchell, S. D., following their marriage. In 1929 the family moved to a farm west of Lake Park were their grandson Jared resides today. Bob and Hazel moved into Lake Park in 1963. Bob died on August 20, 1975 and Hazel continued to reside in her home until October 15, 1979 when failing health forced her to move to the Lake Park Care Center where she died August 15, 1980, after suffering a massive heart attack.
Hazel was member of the Lake Park United Methodist Church and was an active member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service which later became the United Methodist Women. She was a long time member of the Practical Pleasure Club, the Lake Park Women’s Club and the Rebekahs.
Hazel is survived by her son Robert and his wife Sally of Lake Park, her daughter Donna Greenwood of Des Moines, six grandchildren; Jared Herbert of Lake Park, Pam Hansen of Minneapolis, and Jan Carter of Boston, Sharon Kinton of Kansas City, Ronna Greenwood of Des Moines and Debbie Thomas of Huxley; and three great-grandchildren, Paul and Ashlie Kinton and Brita Hansen. She was proceded in death by her husband, her son-in-law Ron Greenwood, her parents and two brothers and two sisters. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Soloist was Ron Graham and organist was Mrs. Ron Graham. Mr. Graham sand “No Night There.” The congregation sang “Rock of Ages” and “Amazing Grace.”
