Clinton, Iowa, Saturday, May 30, 1896AN INDIAN RELIC
An immense granite battle axe head was discovered two feet underground on what is known as the sand ridge near Burlington, a place formerly infested with Indians and where Black Hawk had his headquarters for years. The specimen is the largest, finest and most nearly perfect ever found in Iowa, being over a foot in length and 16 inches in circumference where the handle had fitted on before it decayed or rotted away. It must have required an Indian of gigantic size to wield it. It has been placed on exhibition.
