Biography ~ Timon Young

Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa,
(Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), pp. 547-548:

"TIMON YOUNG, farmer, resides on section 34, Garden Grove Township, where he owns 150 acres of land in a good state of cultivation. He was born in Baden, Germany, in 1824, son of Mathew and Anna M. Young. He emigrated to America in 1851 and lived in New York until 1855, then came to Decatur County, where he has since resided. He was married in New York in 1855, to Eva Kolb, a native of Bavaria, where she was born in 1833. Their children -- Phillip H., born January17, 1856; Charles E., born December 31, 1857; Richard D., born January27, 1860; Henry, born September 22,1862; George W., born December 15, 1864; Guy P., born June 18, 1867; Anna M., born December 2, 1869, and Kate, born September 22, 1874. When Mr. Young and wife landed at Chariton the hack-driver wanted $8 to bring them to Garden Grove, when $5 was all he had. They concluded to save their money and walked the whole distance in one day, carrying their baggage in their hands tied up on a little red pocket handkerchief. The first year of their settlement here Mrs. Young worked out for wages. After a short time Mr. Young borrowed money from G. P. Arnold's father and bought a little home. By subsequent purchase he has kept adding to it until he now owns a fine farm. His son Phillip married Thyrza Shaw and they have one child -- Edna L. Richard married Lillie Hooker and they have one child - Verda A. Mr. Young is a man highly respected in his community. Postoffice, Garden Grove."
