Fred Manning Young was born February 22, 1887, north of Grand River. He was the son of Nervesta Edwards Young and William H. Young. He attended the Foland School and the Leon, Iowa, school for a few years while his father served as Decatur County Treasurer.

Ruth Ward was born August 18, 1893, at Marshfield, Mo. She was the daughter of Loretta Millstead Ward and Daniel Ward. In 1896, when she was three years old, her parents moved by team and wagon and located northeast of Grand River, Iowa. She attended the Brick and Foland schools.

On March 1, 1910, Fred and Ruth were married.

Their entire married life was devoted to farming. Fred enjoyed raising horses and breaking them.

Five children were born to this union: [Doris Arlene (Young) Hewlett, Donald Ward Young, Cleta Irene (Young) Knorr, Frederick "Maurice" Young and Chester Richard "Chet" Young].

Although he was not an "official" member of the Elk Chapel congregation
Laddie probably was among the most faithful attendees.
NOTE: Fred died April 9, 1961, Mount Ayr, Iowa. Ruth died October 29, 1978, Mount Ayr. They were interred at the Grand River Cemetery, Grand River, Iowa.
