A.J. Wheaton was born in a log cabin north of Pulaski March 8, 1896. He was the son of John and Sadie Wheaton.
He attended school at Pulaski through the 8th grade when he quit school and went to Nebraska to work in a brick yard.
Arlie was a World War I veteran, having enlisted when he was 18 years of age, serving in Co. H. 33rd Div. 131 Inf. He was in the battles of Chateau Thierry, St. Miheal, Meuse Argonne Forest, Verdun, Hamel, St. Hilaire and Chippery Ridge. He served under the leadership of Col. Sanborn and General John J. Pershing.
After the signing of the Armistice November 11,1918, he returned home June 1,1919. At this time he went to work in the poultry business for Swift and Company- later for Nial Prevo.
On September 20, 1924, Arlie and Doris Hamberg were united in marriage. They had two sons, Wilbur and Donald.
In 1924 he started taking care of the cemeteries at Pulaski, Iowa and continued for 31 years. Arlie was an Assessor for Davis County for 30 years and retired in 1969 because of his health,
Arlie died April 25, 1970. He will always be remembered for his wit, homespun humor and compassion for his fellow man.
