Joy Bassett, 75, died Sunday, October 7, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 12, at Waukee United Methodist Church of which she was a member. Burial of the cremated remains will follow at Waukee Cemetery.
Joy was born September 16, 1937, in Dexter, Iowa to Rex and Margaret (Jessup) Murphy. She graduated from Menlo High School and married Donald Bassett on January 22, 1956. In 1962 they made their home in Waukee where they raised their three children. Joy was a homemaker and enjoyed boating, camping, dancing, playing Bridge and various card games. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women. Joy will always be remembered for her beautiful flower gardens.
Joy is survived by her daughter Christy (John) Jungman of Van Meter, two sons; Jerry (Deb) Bassett of Grimes and Darrell (Dawn) Bassett of Urbandale, six grandchildren; Matt (Sarah) and Patrick Jungman, Hilary Bassett, Jennifer (Lucas) Tacker, Dena and Kimberly Bassett, her siblings, Keith (Dixie) Murphy of St. Charles, Fay (Bob) Edgington of Casey, Leo (Marilyn) Murphy of Prescott Valley, AZ and Gene (Judy) Murphy of Menlo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant daughter, Dena.
A Memorial Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Waukee United Methodist Church in Waukee where the family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to her church. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
