A YOUNG LADY NEAR REDFIELD SHOT LAST NIGHT BY SOME UNKNOWN VILLIAN.
Redfield, July 21, 1877EDITOR LEADER: Our town was thrown into a state of intense excitement last evening by the report that Miss Fannie Jones, daughter of Rev. John E. Jones, had been shot from her horse in the public road while on her way from school. The facts are as follows: Mr. Males in going home from Redfield, when about two miles from here came across her in the road covered with dust and blood, trying to crawl to the shelter of the trees; he carried her about a fourth of a mile to the nearest house, and went for her friends. Drs. Rust and Caldwell, were called and on examination found two shot in the arm and five in the back and side. They were unable to find any of them by probing. The wounds are very painful. The physicians think she will recover, but say she is seriously hurt and may die. Miss Jones is aged 17 years, is a very respectable girl, loved and esteemed by all who knew her, and there seems to be no idea as to any cause any one could have for the shooting. Everything shows that the shooting was done deliberately. The place where the villian stood was not more than twenty feet from the victim. The size of the footprint shows that it was a man. There is intense excitement and the country is being scoured by scores of men, but the scoundrel has not yet been discovered.
