POWELL HOFF (13 Aug 1801 Prince William Co., VA - 6 May 1870 Dallas Co., IA) was the son of JONATHAN HOFF (1775 Pr. William Co., VA - 1812 Fearing Twp., Washington Co., OH) and ELIZABETH "Betsy" DUNCAN (1785 PA - 1839 Wasg Co., OH); and that JONATHAN HOFF was one of the sons of Rev. DANIEL HOFF (1746 Raritan, Somerset Co., NY - 1797 Pr. Wm. Co., VA) and wife, SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFITT (1748 VA - 1772 Lawrence Tnshp., Wash'g Co., OH). However, I have some conflicting data to suggest that the father of POWELL HOFF was, in fact, an AMOS HOFF. POWELL HOFF's father had a son, AMOS by his first wife, LAURA TITUS who died. He remarried W#2 in about 1772. This would make that AMOS HOFF the half-uncle of POWELL. This AMOS HOFF is buried close to the grave of POWELL HOFF in the Hoff-Prarie Cem., near Grimes, Dallas Co., IA). I have photos of all the headstones there.

I descend through POWELL HOFF/MARTHA BREWSTER's son JOHN H. HOFF(11 Apr 1830 Chesterhill, Washington Co., OH - 31 Mar 1909 Des Moines, IA; Bd; Waukee Cem., IA) and his spouse, Mary Ann Akins. He was one of the 12 offspring of POWELL and redoubtable wife MARTA. JOHN H. HOFF and MARY ANN ADKINS had 8 children: 1)WILLIAM H. HOFF (1855-?); 2) OSCAR C. "Shorty" HOFF (1858 - 14 Dec 1941 Br. Co., Can)(Unmarried and no children); 3) KATIE HOFF CAMPBELL (1960 - 1939); 4) MARTHA ETTA HOFF DAVIDSON (1965 - 1929); 5) JESSIE HOFF (1872 - 1888); 6) HILEY HOFF (1864-75); 7) CHARLES WORTH HOFF (1880 - 1947 Linnford, Alberta, Canada); and, 8) JOHN CASSIUS HOFF - {my grandfather} (5 Mar 1875 Dallas Co., IA - 10 Mar 1960 Des Moines, IA). On 30 Jun 1904 in Hartley, IA, he married MABLE MINA TENNANT (11 Feb 1888 Oskalooska, Keokuk Co., IA - 16 Mar 1963 DSM, IA). They had 3 children: {My father}, JOHN RICHARD HOFF (1909 - 1970 DSM, IA); JEANNE BEATRICE HOFF GOODWIN (1911- 2000) wife of William John Goodwin, Jr. of DSM; and DORIS MAE HOFF HOHL (1913-1997) wife of Dr. George Hohl, PhD, of Ames, IA). My father, John Richard Hoff was married 0n 1 Sep 1934 in Des Moines, IA to VALETTA FLORENCE SCOTT (24 Jun 1912 Boise, ID - Now living in DSM age 91), and they had 2 sons: {me} JOHN SCOTT HOFF (2 Jan 1946 DSM, IA - Now living in Chicago), and ROBERT TENNANT HOFF (4 Jun 1948 DSM, IA - Now living unmarried and without children in Washington, DC). I have 2 children: JENNIFER JO HOFF (13 Sep 1982 - Now single and without children in Winnetka, IL - a 2004 Grad. of Natinal-Lewis Univ. in Evanston, IL), and JOHN BARON HOFF (29 Sep 1984 - Now living in Winnetka, IL - a freshman at the Univ. of Illinois; Eagle Scout and Airman first Class in The Ill ANG, 182nd Frt. Wg., Springfield, IL). That is my leg of the HOFF Family tree down from POWELL HOFF (son of Jonathan Hoff and Grandson of the Rev. Daniel Hoff) to date.
