TRAGIC DEATH OF EVERETT ECKLUND LAST WEEK BRINGS SORROW TO KIRON COMMUNITY

Funeral Services Were Held Saturday Afternoon at 2 o'clock From the Kiron Baptist Church

Kiron, Jan 23--- Residents of this community were shocked when they learned of the death of Everett Ecklund last Wednesday evening, January 18. He died shortly after he received injuries in an auto accident about 8 o'clock that evening. He was enroute to Boyer when the accident occurred one mile south and two and a half miles east of Kiron between two hills just beyond the Herman Scheldorf place.

His Chevrolet sedan collided with a truck coming from the east on a bridge and his machine was thrown through the railing and down a deep gully. He was badly bruised internally and lived but a brief time. The truck was driven by two men from Castana who had been hauling hay to Boyer and the men were enroute to their home in Castana. The Chevrolet was completely demolished while the truck was not badly damaged. A doctor was summoned at once but his services were of no avail. The sheriff and coroner were called to the scene but no inquest was necessary as the collision was termed purely accidental.

Everett Clarence Ecklund, son of Nels and Lena Ecklund, was born in Sac county on 30 April 1908, and had reached the age of 25 years, 8 months and 17 days. Following his education in the rural schools, he entered the Kiron high school, graduating with the class of '26. His entire life was spent in this community. For a time he was employed by the Kiron auto company, but for the last two years he worked on a farm in Sac county.
A young man of ability and an efficient worker, Everett was liked by everyone. He possessed a cheerful disposition and congenial ways which enabled him to acquire friends easily. Not only in the family circle will he be missed but also among his many friends in this and neighboring communities. During his high school career, Everett was a fine student and took a prominent part in athletics. He was converted, baptized and joined the Kiron Baptist church in 1920.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 from the Oscar Finstrom home and at 2 o'clock from the Kiron Baptist church with the pastor, Rev. Gordon Carlson, officiating. Special songs were rendered by a quartet composed of Jubel and Paul Hedstrom, Guy Eckman and Harry Lindstrom and a mixed quarter composed of Mrs. Anna Garner, Jubel Hedstrom, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lindstrom. Miss Fern Johnson presided at the piano. The beautiful floral tributes spoke silently of the high esteem for the departed brother. This was one of the largest funerals held in Kiron in many years. Interment was made in the family plot in the Community cemetery. He was borne to his last resting place by six of his friends, namely: Wallace and Edgar Larson, Kenneth Johnson, Leslie Swanson, Ernest Turin and Newell Clauson.

He leaves to mourn his untimely death his bereaved mother, Mrs. Lena Ecklund, three brothers and five sisters, namely: Enoch of Odebolt, Russell of Denison, Myrtle (Mrs. Oscar Finstrom) of Kiron, Mabel (Mrs. Ed Maddison) of Omaha, Agnes (Mrs. Bob Lewis) of Sac City, Ruth of Rockwell City, Arlene of Omaha and Theodore of Kiron. His father and one brother, George, preceded him in death. All his surviving brothers and sisters were present at the funeral. In addition to his family he leaves a host of other relatives and many friends including his betrothed, Miss Frieda Rostermundt, of Manning, who attended the services, as did his sister-in-law, Mrs. Naomi Ecklund, and children of Odebolt. Friends from many neighboring towns attended the last rites.
