Passed Away at Home Friday 10 May 1935

The community was shocked late Friday afternoon to hear the sad message that Fred Carlson, one of the highly esteemed pioneers, had passed away.

.Although his health was failing it was not thought in general that his end would come so sudden. Fred C. Carlson, was born October 8, 1850 in Ronneby, Blekinge Län, Sweden. He came to this country together with his parents when he was 16 years old, when they settled in DeKalb, Illinois. He came to this locality some 55 years ago, where he became engaged in farming in Hayes township, Ida county, which was his home up to the time of his death. He was one of the early pioneers of this land, who labored hard and did much for the betterment of the community. He was united in marriage to Miss Hannah Anderson March 16, 1894. To this union were born three children, one daughter and two sons, all living, George, Fredena and Vetus.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith while in Sweden. When he came to DeKalb, he became a member of the Lutheran church there, later transferring his membership to the Bethel Lutheran upon his arrival in this locality, and was a faithful and loyal member until his death.

Mr. Carlson was the youngest of five children. He was the last of them to pass away, it being 33 years on the day of his death since his last sister passed away. Mr. Carlson has enjoyed the best of health until the past few years, when his health began to fail him, even then, he was up and around most of the time, only being confined to his bed the last four and a half week. Death came from heart ailment. He had reached the ripe old age of 84 years, 7 months and 2 days. He passed peacefully away at 4:30 Friday afternoon, May 10, 1935. He leaves to mourn his departure his beloved wife, and the three children, all at home. His parents passed away at DeKalb, Illinois and his two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. He also leaves two nieces and three nephews, a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

Mr. Carlson was very fond of his family and home. He was a devoted husband, father and friend. He had developed a noble character and revealed to his fellowmen a high conception of Christian living. He was always fond of reading and loved to read his bible and had covered the entire Book the past winter. He was interested in the welfare of those about him and in the community at large. He had of late expressed his desire to go to his heavenly home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 from the home, and at 2 o'clock from the Bethel Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. G. L. Dagner. A vocal solo was sung in Swedish by Miss Anna Anderson of Odebolt and , one number was rendered by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. E. N. Sandstrom, Mrs. M. A. Sandstrom, David Johnson and Alvin Lundell, Mrs. C. R. Lundell accompanied at the piano. The many and beautiful floral Offerings in their silence spoke of the high esteem for the departed brother. Many gathered to pay their last tribute to him. Relatives who came from a distance for the funeral were Nelly Grau and Mrs. Otto Johnson of Worthington, Minnesota, Gust and Charles Liddall of Westbrook, Minnesota, C. J. F. Carlson, Sam Carlson, and son Jerry of DeKalb, Illinois, Axel Carlson of Chicago and members of the Bill Belstein family from Worthington, Minnesota.
