He settled at Amboy, Illinois where he remained 5 years. In the fall of 1881 he came to Iowa making his home in Hayes township and has resided here ever since. He and Anders Anderson of Hayes are believed to be the last of the original Swedish colony that settled in the southeastern part of the county.

Mr. Carlson was united in marriage to Miss Albertina Anderson, 24 June 1883. This happy union was blessed with 10 children, four of whom have preceded the father in death and six of whom remain to feel this loss. The close relatives who will feel this vacancy are his faithful wife and life ling companion, two sons who are married and reside in this community, Albert and Emil Carlson; two daughters at home, the Misses Selma and Ellen Carlson; and two sons at home, Oscar and Reuben. There is also one sister, Mrs. Mathilda Larson of Des Moines, and two brothers, John Bertel of Peasli, Montana and Andrew Bertel of Duluth, Minnesota. Besides these there are five grandchildren, many other relatives as well as a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

Mr. Carlson was one of the few remaining pioneers of this community having resided here 49 years. He was a charter member of the Odebolt Mission church and retained his membership there until the time of his demise. He has been in good health, hardy and strong until last winter when he began to fail in health. He seemed however, to be in better health again when he suddenly became the victim of a stroke Thursday morning, 17 April 1930. From this he never fully recovered. He passed away at peace with his Creator at 3:30 Tuesday morning, April 22. At the time of his death Mr. Carlson had reached the age of 76 years, 10 months ands 3 days.
