Death of a Pioneer

Mr. James R. Smith, who has resided in this city for two years past and has been keeping a boarding house on Seventh avenue just east of the Methodist church, died of cancer about two o'clock yesterday afternoon after being confined to his home for nine months. Deceased, who was the youngest brother of Messrs. A. C. and John G. Smith, the well known farmers, was one of the early settlers in Iowa, locating in Jackson county in 1840. A few years ago he gave up farming and settled in Lyons, where he was for some time landlord of the Jacobson house. He was 54 years of age on the 15th of last September. Deceased leaves a widow and two children, also three grown children by a former wife. The funeral will occur on Saturday at ten o'clock, at which hour the procession will leave the residence on Seventh avenue and proceed to the Methodist church in Lyons, where Rev. Wm. Lease will conduct the services. The burial will occur at the Hess cemetery west of the city.

The funeral services of the late Jas. R. Smith at the Methodist church this forenoon were attended by a large concourse of people. The remains were taken out to the Hess cemetery.
