Obituary: Robert Gene "Jake" Baker

Robert Gene Baker was born July 11, 1938, in Mt. Ayr, Iowa to Lyman H. and Helen L. Baker and departed this life Sunday, October 23, 1983 at his home in Osceola, Iowa, at the early age of 45 yrs, 3 months, and 12 days. He attended school in Tingley and Kellerton, Iowa

On March 11, 1967, he was united in marriage to Sharon L. Stearns DeVore of Osceola, where they spent most of their married life. To this union two children were born: Brenda Joy and Steven Gene. He also raised Sharon’s son, Jim, as his own son. His family was his pride and joy.

Bob spent his short life as a truck driver, starting out for Whitey Rice in Mt. Ayr. For the past 16 years, he was employed by Laverty Sprayers, Inc. in Indianola, Iowa. Bob made many friends during his years as an over-the-road truck driver. Not having been able to carry on this occupation would have been unbearable to him.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents. His mother in 1966 and his father in 1981.

Bob is survived by his wife Sharon, sons, Jim and Steve, and daughter, Brenda, all of the home and a grandson Levi of Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Also left to mourn his passing are 6 brothers:
Gerald and Wife Harriet of Ankeny, Iowa; Darrel and wife Carol of Ocala, Florida; Dick and wife Carol of Des Moines, Iowa; Ralph and wife Rayma of Blue Springs, Missouri; Kenneth and wife Patricia of Fort Madison, Iowa; and Terry and wife Kathy of Broomfield, Colorado;

3 sisters:
Evelyn Bradley and husband Daryl of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Rosemary Blauer and husband Darold of Key West Florida; and Cheryl Smith and husband Bob of Des Moines, Iowa

He also leaves:
Mother-in-law Ruth Stearns of Osceola, Iowa; Father-in-law Harold Stearns of Lucas, Iowa; sister-in-law Charlene Foland and husband Richard of Russell, Iowa; and brother-in-law Keith Stearns and wife Sylvia of Hopkinton, Minnesota.
29 nieces and nephews, 17 great nieces and nephews, 2 aunts Mildred Cheek and husband Roy of Creston, Iowa and Lula Baker of Creston, Iowa.

Services were held 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 26, 1983 at the Kale Funeral Home in Osceola. Reverend Walter Zarr of Kellerton, Iowa officiated. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola, Iowa.
