A Bud, Yet Unfolded, Blossoms in Heaven.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Pomeroy, of this city, is overshadowed with deepest sorrow, the family chain having been broken and the home made desolate by the hand of death which entered it early last Monday morning and snatched from their midst their only and beloved son, Harold Lambert, just in the morning of life.
His sickness was of but a few days duration and his unexpected death has been a great shock to the entire community, many having never heard of his illness until the news of his death was reported. He had been feeling as well as usual up to Wednesday morning, when he complained some of a pain in his side, but he went to school as usual, being a very studious boy and attended the entire day. Little did his schoolmates think when he left school on Wednesday night, that ere the roll would be called on Monday morning his name would be transferred to the roll up yonder.
As soon as he arrived home he complained again to his mother of not feeling well and was immediately sent to Dr. Horton’s office for something to relieve the pain. On learning that the pain was on the right side, the doctor immediately made an examination and learned as he feared, that it was a clear case of appendicitis, and his condition such as to need prompt and most careful medical attention and he lost no time in getting Harold to home and in bed. He was some better the next morning, but in the afternoon he grew worse again, and his father was sent for, arriving early Friday morning. On Saturday it was decided necessary to perform an operation and Dr. Horton summoned Drs. Crouse of Waterloo, and Rolfe of Waverly, and a trained nurse, but on Sunday morning at the time set for the operation the patient seemed better and the operation was delayed, but in a few hours the symptoms became such that it was seen that an operation must be performed at once. The three doctors performed the operation, and found the appendix greatly enlarged and that mortification had already made its appearance. The patient seemed to be doing nicely from then on until 1 o’clock when he was taken worse again and at 6 o’clock Monday morning passed to everlasting rest.
Harold’s familiar figure will no more be seen on our streets and with his schoolmates, with whom he was a general favorite. How sadly he will be missed in the home, where he has ever been the pride of his father and the joy of the mother. His life has been a beautiful life. One of his greatest characteristics was the courtesy with which he treated both young and old. He was an exemplary child, loved and admired by all who knew him, for his upright and manly ways. He was of a happy disposition and always had a smile and kind word for everyone.
There was a profusion of flowers given by sympathizing friends, among them a lovely pillow of pure white with the name Harold, in pink, his favorite color, given by the pupils of the sixth room.
The funeral was conducted from the home Wednesday at 3 o’clock, Rev. J. A. Sutton, assisted by Rev. Davis, officiating, and was largely attended. It was indeed a sad birthday gathering as it would have been Harold’s 15th birthday had he lived. The burial took place at Greenwood Cemetery. Six of his classmates, Fritz Waltz, Lee Fritcher, Russ Bucklin, Clinton Winklebleck, Josie Laird and Ray Eastman were pall bearers.
Miss Anderson, his teacher, and the junior class of the third room, of which he was a member, marched in a body preceding the casket, and following the mourners marched the senior class.
The sympathy of the whole community goes out to the heart broken parents in their hour of sorrow.
