1880 History of Poweshiek county. Freeman Howe was born November 21, 1833, in Edgar, Illinois, where he attended school till 9 years of age, then in 1842 came with his parents to Iowa, and settled in Cedar co., where, after finishing his education, he engaged in farming in various places till 1869, when he came to this county. Mr. Howe was married Feb. 14, 1854 in Cedar co., Iowa to Miss Melinda Ridenour, a resident of Cedar co. She was born in 1833 in Ohio, and came with her parents to Iowa in 1833 (should be 1843). 9 children are the fruits of this union: Almira aged 25 now the wife of L. Smith, James Frank 22, Millard F. 19, Elizabeth 17, Julia M. 15, Luella 13, Harry and Henrietta (twins) 9, and Wellington 4. They have buried two: an infant in 1854 and Legrand B. 1875 aged 1 year and 11 months.
