I translated the following article from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on 6 August 1875. Any information in brackets or notes at the end is my own explanation. It reads as follows:
Mt. Carmel
5 Aug 1875The town of Mt. Carmel counts eight houses, in addition to a church and school, with 42 residents. In relation to business, it has a post office, a general merchandise store, a blacksmith, a wagon maker, two shoemaker shops, and three taverns.
