I translated the following article from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 23 April 1909. Any information in brackets or notes at the end is my own explanation. It reads as follows:
The newspaper, “Breda Watchman,” which has been published in Breda during the past 19 years, has gone out of business. In last week’s edition, the current editor, C. A. Bohnenkamp, bid his readers farewell and said that he was going to Duncomb, Iowa, near Fort Dodge, where he is going to establish a new paper. Newspapers in smaller towns are not profitable, which is why the current editor gave up the undertaking and sought a larger place to work. The “Watchman” was founded in 1890 by the head teacher [principal?], J. J. McMahon in Breda. A few years later, C. A. Bohnenkamp took over the editorship and put out a good local newspaper. Among our exchange papers, the “Watchman” was always a welcome guest.
