I translated the following article from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 14 June 1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
On Thursday June 13, Mr. J. P. König [Koenig] and his wife in Halbur celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. Mr. Koenig and Miss Christina Hausmann were joined for life on 13 June 1870 in Mendota, Illinois. In 1873 the family moved to Halbur, Carroll County, and they have lived there since then. Ten children, six boys and four girls, were produced from this very happy marriage and they have had the great happiness and special joy of participating in the beautiful family celebration and seeing that their parents and grandparents could also attend the celebration in full vigor and health. Many friends and relatives were invited and appeared in order to bring the highly respected anniversary couple their congratulations. It was a very cheerful celebration, and our readers can well imagine that there was no shortage of all sorts of refreshments. Everyone appears to have arrived in the best of humor and participated fully in the happy occasion. The anniversary couple is well-known and respected in the entire county, and especially so in Halbur and the community of Hillsdale. For many years Mr. J. P. Koenig was the churchwarden at the Catholic church in Hillsdale and during all this time has done meritorious service at the church and school. And so all in the area participated very actively in the happy event. We also received an invitation, but since the celebration fell right on a Thursday, which for us is the busiest day of the week, we could not comply with the friendly summons, for which we sincerely ask forgiveness. But the anniversary couple will not get off so easily, for there is always another day. . . . And until then we wish the anniversary couple happiness and blessings, and in another 25 years may they enjoy in full vigor their golden anniversary.
