I translated the following article from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published on Friday, 8 February 1895. Any information in brackets or notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:
On Friday last week the Carroll Turn-Verein [Gymnastics Club] held its general assembly in which the election of officials was undertaken. The club-members were present in large numbers, a sign that they took great interest in the club’s election issues. Unfortunately the First Speaker, Mr. Ed. Richmann, under whose leadership the young club has so strongly developed, declared that he does not want to accept the position any longer. This announcement has caused great sadness among the members. The club will not be able to replace his able and independent leadership very easily. But after dealing with the business on the day’s agenda, they proceeded to the election, with the following result: First Speaker, F. Florencourt; Second Speaker, U. Albertson; First Gymnastics Supervisor, Jos. Wiederhold; Second Gymnastics Supervisor, F. Hannasch; Treasurer, F. Marien; First Secretary, John Eltgroth; Equipment Master, Frank Ries; Spokesman (for a three-year term), Phil. Kaib. The club now counts about 70 members, and at the last meeting about 14 men reported for induction. When the topic of constructing a new gymnastics hall arose, the plan was enthusiastically supported by many members. It is expected that when the plan is fully developed the club will build an appropriately fine and beautiful hall. Committees were named to look for a building location and ways and means to acquire the necessary funds.
