The Sentinel, 1899 History

I translated the following article from Der Carroll Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Carroll, Iowa, between about 1874 and 1920. It was originally published in a special 25th Anniversary Edition of the paper on Friday, 20 September 1899. Information in brackets and notes at the end are my own explanations. It reads as follows:

The Sentinel

Among all the English-language Democratic newspapers in the county, the Sentinel is probably the most fashionable and most widely circulated. It was founded in the spring of 1876 by Ed. Tabor in Glidden. It was later moved to Carroll by Mr. Russell, whereupon H. C. Ford took it over. In 1884 Mr. M. Miller took over the business, and he acquired all new equipment and presses and secured the service of an outstanding editor, Mr. Ed. Adams. From this time on, the paper acquired more influence from year to year, and soon it was the most widely circulated English paper in the county.

In 1889, Mr. J. L. Powers purchased a half interest in the Sentinel. He was born in northwest Ohio and became a printer’s devil in March 1875. He has a good education and is an excellent editor. Miller and Powers directed the Sentinel until 1891, when Mr. C. C. Colclo took over Mr. Miller’s half interest.

Mr. Colclo came to Carroll County from Ohio about 40 years ago, when he was still a small boy. He attended the State Agricultural School in Ames and was later honored with the office of county school superintendent. He has the satisfaction of having been elected three times with large majorities. During the time that these men published the Sentinel, both received appointment as postmaster.

Mr. Colclo as well as Mr. Powers are very energetic and capable editors, and they enjoy the goodwill not only of their many readers but of the public in general.
