Steven A. Kaune, 81, of Independence, Iowa and formerly of Oelwein, Iowa, died Thursday afternoon, January 30, 2025, at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

Steven Albert Kaune was born October 30, 1943, in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Ivan Luther and Mildred Ada (Eschen) Kaune. In 1962, he graduated from West Central High School in Maynard, Iowa. On May 6, 1967, he was united in marriage to Arlys Evonne Stinson at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein. Over the years, Steve was a salesman for Conseco Life Insurance and Capital American Life Insurance, worked at McLeod USA, John Deere in Waterloo, and was a correctional officer for the Buchanan County Sherriff’s Office. Steve was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein. He served on the Oelwein Library Board and Hazleton City Council. Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, cards, cribbage, cooking and eating, men and women’s Iowa Hawkeye sports, Fantasy Football with family and wintering in Florida with Judy Gruetzmacher.

Steve is survived by his son: Michael (Tina) Kaune of Waverly; granddaughter and fishing buddy: Paityn Kaune; step grandson: Blake Kruse; special friend: Judy Gruetzmacher of Independence; sisters: Lois Schlatter of Independence, Marilyn (Tim) Darland of Independence and Joann (Vaughn) Drewes of West Union; 3 sisters-in-law: Iva Jean Kaune of Fayette, Judy Kaune of Hazleton and Darlene (Ron) Makin of Atlanta, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers: Daryl Kaune, Robert Kaune, Marvin Kaune and Laverne Kaune; and in-laws: Jeannie Kaune and Harold Schlatter.

Funeral services are pending with Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein.
