MRS. ROLLAND SMITH OF WINTHROP IS STATE FARM HOMEMAKING WINNER

Mrs. Rolland Smith, Buchanan county farm woman, has been selected as one of six Iowa farm women to receive the Master Farm Homemaking award for 1952.

Wallaces' Farmer and Iowa Homestead, sponsors of the award since 1940, will honor these women and their families at a luncheon in Des Moines on Tuesday, June 17. These six women have been selected for outstanding work in their homes and in their communities.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith live on the farm near Winthrop that Mrs. Smith's grandfather purchased before the Civil war. They hope to pass the farm along to their grandsons.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith have three daughters, all away from home. They are: Mrs. Lee Jensen and Mrs. Maurice Stoneman, Independence, and Margaret, Burbank Calif.

Mrs. Smith has worked and held offices in practically all community organizations. Formerly she was county Farm Bureau woman's chairman. She represents that organization on the state planning committee. Both Mr. and Mrs. Smith are members of the Methodist church at Winthrop.

Mrs. Smith is county library chairman and for many years has been active in 4-H work.

Other farm women to receive the homemaking award are: Mrs. Herbert Rope of Page county, Mrs. Oliver N. Baker of Calhoun, Mrs. Harold Higgins of Tama county, Mrs. Clay Timmerman of Franklin county and Mrs. John Weigle of Black Hawk county. Nominations for the master farm homemaking award come in voluntarily from neighbors, friends and co-workers. Each candidate is personally investigated. The final selection is made by a board of judges.

This year the judges were: Miss Louise Rosenfield, director for home economics, extension service, Iowa State College, Miss Fannie Gannon, home management specialist, Iowa State College, Mrs. Alvern Wendell, farm woman of Woodbury county, and Zoe Murphy, the homemaking editor of Wallaces' Farmer and Iowa Homestead.
