Death of a Distinguished Woman.
A Waverly dispatch announced the death on the 29th ult. of one of Iowa's most distinguished women, the widow of former Lt. Governor (in 57-8 Orrin Faville. It says:
Waverly, Dec. 30. —Mrs. M M. Faville died at her home in this city last evening at the advanced ago of 88. She was without doubt the most remarkable woman that ever called this city her home. The good that she has done in her quiet way can never be estimated.
She was formerly Miss Maria M. Peck, While preceptress in Cazenovia seminary she married Orrin Favllle, professor of ancient languages in the same institution. Afterwards she was preceptress of Troy conference academy and McKendree college, and later of Ohio Wesleyan university, of which her husband was president.
In 1857 Orrin Faville was elected lieutenant governor of Iowa, and in 1864 he was elected state superintendent of public instruction. In 1867 he resigned this position on account of failing health and came to Waverly, where he died in 1872.
From the day of her arrival in this city to the day of her death, Mrs. Faville was teacher of the Bible class in the Methodist church. In this work she was the author of incalculable good. It is said that she has instructed and influenced more youth who afterward became famous than any other teacher of the present day. In a single class, under her charge in Cazenovia seminary sat four boys who afterwards answered to the names of Leland Stanford and Bishops Bowman, Andrews and Newman.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows she is buried in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly and that she was born September 18, 1815 and died December 28, 1903.
