Gerald Harvey (Gery) Sutton, DO, age 60, died December 24, 2011, at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, from complications of early onset Alzheimer's Disease.
Gery was born June 24, 1951, in Boone, the son of Gerald H. Sutton, MD and Calista (Olander) Sutton. Graduating from Boone High School in 1969, he graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN in 1973. Following in the tradition of his father, his aunt Sara Sutton, DO and his uncle Craig Sutton, MD, Gery chose medicine as his career. He earned his medical degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Sciences in Des Moines, now Des Moines University. He completed an American Osteopathic Association approved rotating internship at OSU Medical Center, formerly Oklahoma Osteopathic Medical Center, from July 1, 1976 to June 30, 1977. He completed a family practice residency at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke Medical Center, Christ Hospital in Chicago from July 1, 1977 to June 30, 1980. He was named Resident of the Year and was the first DO in the history of the hospital to earn this distinction.
Gery practiced family and geriatric medicine for 26 years in Claremore, OK, first starting his own practice and later as part of the Tulsa St. John Health System. In 2007, he and his wife Christine returned home to Boone. He planned to join the Boone Family Practice Clinic but retired due to his illness. He was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Gery enjoyed horses, running marathons, pheasant hunting, reading history books, playing chess, and spending time with his family. He was an avid Cubs and Cyclones fan. Gery was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Boone. After his diagnosis in October of 2007, he participated in a drug trial for a new Alzheimer's medication at the Mayo Clinic.
Gery was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brothers Bill and Stan. He is survived by his wife, Christine McMahon Sutton of Boone; a daughter, Elinor Sutton of New York City; a daughter Julianne (Coy) Morgan of Dallas, TX; a son, Shaughn Sutton of Dallas, TX; a son, Patrick Sutton, a student at the University of Oklahoma in Norman; a son, Michael Sutton, a student at Boston College; a stepson Nathan (Traci) Clark of Las Vegas, NV; a stepdaughter Kelly (Skyler) Olmstead of Tulsa, OK; a sister Cynthia (Bruce) Schenck of Glenwood; a sister Emily (Dart) Demery of Boone; a sister-in-law, Barbara Sutton of Johnston; a brother-in-law Steve (Brenda) McMahon of Boone; his stepmother, Dianna Sutton of Boone; four grandchildren, Hayden, Noah, Scarlett, and Michael; nieces and nephews; and his first wife, Mary Sutton of Tulsa.
Following Gery's wishes, his body has been cremated. A graveside service will be Saturday, April 14, 2012, at the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone. Burial of his cremains will follow the service. A Celebration of Gery's Life will be held that afternoon. Additional details will be announced later.
Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Boone or to a scholarship fund which will be established in Gery's name for a Boone High School graduate entering the health care field.
