Andrew P Anderson was born in Mattrod socken, Kristianstad, Skane, Sweden on April 13, 1845. He was one of five children born to Peter Anderson (1807-1890) and his wife Truen (1815-1906). The father was originally named Anders Peterson and is sometimes referred to both ways in the early records. The father and two of his sons came to this country in 1868, settling at Swede Bend, Iowa. One son was Andrew P Anderson and the other son was Nels Palm. The father bought 128 acres of land in Section 5 (N1/2 of NE ¼ and SW ¼ of NE ¼) on Oct 9, 1869 for $787.50 and moved onto it that same year. The mother joined her husband here in the 1870’s, her other three sons staying in Sweden where they died. The father died on his farm here in Grant Township in 1890, aged 83 years. The mother moved into Dayton about 1903, where she died in 1906, aged 90 years. Both are buried in the Dayton Cemetery.
Andrew P Anderson arrived in Swede Bend, Iowa in 1868 and lived there for about eight years. He was there married on Sept 17, 1874, to Miss Clara Charlotta Hammer. She was born at Tjarstad, Ostergotland, Sweden on June 8, 1849, the daughter of John Hammer (1817-1887) and his wife Bertha (1814-1887). The parents were natives of Sweden, but immigrated to this country in their later years, spending their lives I the Dayton, Iowa vicinity. Both died in 1887 and are buried in the Dayton Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Anderson did not have any children of their own, but raised a foster daughter, Harriet Hall, from her yearly years. Mr and Mrs Anderson were members of the Dayton Lutheran Church, joining in June of 1877. Mr Anderson was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Sweden on June 10, 1860.
In 1876 Mr and Mrs Anderson came to Grant Township and settled on an 80 acre farm (N1/2 of NE ¼) in Section 5. Mr Anderson had previously purchased this land from his father on Sept 22, 1873. He later bought another 40, then farming 120 acres, all in Section 5. Mr Anderson’s brother Nels Palm (1840-1906), bought two adjacent 40 acre plots of land (including their father’s home place 40) and farmed there until his death in 1906. He is buried in the Dayton Cemetery.
Mr and MRs Anderson retired from their farm about 1903, and with is aged mother, moved into Dayton. Mrs Anderson died on Oct 15, 19223, aged 74 years. She was a sister to Mrs Frank Larson and to Richard E Hammer, both also from Grant Township. Mr Anderson died on Sept 11, 1924, aged 74 years. Both are buried in the Dayton Cemetery. The foster daughter preceded her parents in death. She had three daughters, Mrs Nellie Dycus, Mrs Laura Mills, and Mrs Bernice Feeny, none of whose descendants still reside within Grant Township. The home place farmland in Section 5 was purchased by J Emanuel Anderson and is currently owned by Helen C Anderson. The house no longer stands.
