ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AT WATERLOO, IOWA
Special Dispatch to the Dubuque Times
Waterloo, April, 5th – J. T. Van Schaick , a carriage maker of this city, a well-known and respected citizen, early this morning, made a desperate attempt, or rather two attempts, to commit suicide; first cutting his throat,, inflicting a serious wound, but not necessarily fatal; then stabbing himself in the abdomen, on the left side. The knife penetrated to the abdominal cavity and this wound the attending physicians regard as a fatal one. Mr. Van Schaick is or nearly 60 years of age. He has had some domestic and financial troubles of late, but none so far as known of sufficient gravity to serve by as any means an adequate cause for so terrible a remedy.
