WINGERT, Charles N., an old time resident and the last of the founders of St. Joseph's Church to die, was born in Lester Township on July 26, 1866, the son of Marcus and Katherine Diebold Wingert. After Charles' death, a researcher learned that he was a twin of a girl who died a few hours after birth. Either he was not told of it, or never spoke of it to the family. Charles lived three years in Lester Township, then the family moved two miles North, two miles East and one-quarter mile South of Raymond just off the old Highway 20. His father, Marcus, died in 1872 at 47 years of age when Charles was 6 years old, so the family had tough going while the children were young. On October 11, 1890 Charles married Marguerita Ehr. They lived in his childhood home for two years, then bought and moved into his wife's childhood home one mile South and one-half mile West of Raymond. There they cared for her mother, Marguerita Ehr, until she died on February 15, 1923. Charley spent his life farming and doing odd carpentry jobs around the community. He was a trustee of St. Joseph's Parish and Director of Public School No. 7 in Raymond for many years. Mrs. Wingert died on February 25, 1941, one-half year after celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Charles died on January 30, 1961. They had nine children George, John, Rose, Mary, Matt, Teresa, Charles (Corlis), Joe, and Margaret. They were Democrats and lifetime members of St. Joseph's Church of Raymond.
