Wayne Russell McLaughlin Sr., 80, of Belle Plaine died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, at West Ridge Care Center following a short illness. Services: 1 p.m. Friday at Teahen Funeral Home by Chaplain Brian Reeves. Friends may visit with the family on Friday after 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rose; six children, Steven McLaughlin (Donna Anderson) of Cedar Rapids, Susan (Scot) Underwood of Cedar Rapids, Wayne McLaughlin Jr. of Dennison, Tamara (Daryl) Friedhof of Lakeside, Frank McLaughlin of Lenexa, Kan., and Chandra (Matt) Younie of Lakeside; brother, William McLaughlin of Monaca, Pa.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his dog, Bowser.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Norman Jr. and Gerald McLaughlin; and two sisters, Myra Bosh and Catherine McLaughlin.
Wayne was born on May 21, 1941, in Coraopolis, Pa., the son of Norman and Ollie White McLaughlin. Wayne was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. On Aug. 9, 1968, Wayne married Rose Thompson in Sioux Falls, S.D. From 1973 to 1978 he was the plant operator and manager at the Waste Water Treatment Center in Belle Plaine. He then worked at Rockwell Collins for 15 years, retiring in 2003.
Wayne was a very talented poet and won the Editor's Choice Award twice for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry presented by The National Library of Poetry in 1996. He also was an avid collector of die cast cars and watches and enjoyed fixing watches as well. Wayne was a dog lover and always had one by his side.
A memorial fund has been established in Wayne's name.
