Mrs. Sam Brown and her daughter,
Maude,started Saturday evening
for Fort Collins, Colorado, where
they go to try the effect of that climate
upon the health of Miss Maude,
They expect to be absent a year
and we hope the young lady may
find relief, and return the bright
and happy girl she was in former
years.

Mrs. Sam Brown and daughter of
Exira, Iowa, arrived in the city last
week and have rooms at J. H. Mande-
ville's.

Miss Maude Brown died at an early
hour on Tuesday morning at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Mandeville, of con-
sumption(.) Miss Brown came here last
week with her mother, Mrs. Samuel
Brown, from Exira. Iowa, upon the ad-
vise of her physician, but the disease
with which she was afflicted was too far
advanced for her to receive any benefit
by the change. The bereaved mother
left Tuesday afternoon with the body
for her eastern home.

Maude Brown Dead.

The silent messenger of death has
once more visited our midst and this
time called one of our most estimable
young ladies, Miss Ethel Maud
Brown, who died at Fort Collins,
Colorado, March 28, 1899, aged 18
years, 8 months and 14 days. She
had been ill with consumption for
several months, and on March 19th
her mother took her to Colorado in
hopes of affording her relief, but
the disease had run so far that
nothing could prolong her life for
more than a short time.

The funeral was held in the Methodist
church, on Thursday afternoon,
and the services were conducted
by Rev. O. T. Nichols, assisted
by Rev. Jno. Henry McQuerry, and
Rev. H. L. Wissler. The subject
selected by Rev. Nichols for this
occasion was "The Rest of the
Christian," taking as his text Isaiah
14:3. The music was furnished by
the choir of the Methodist church
and was fully up to their high standard;
several ot the selections being
being favorite songs of Maud's.

The large church was filled and
the floral decorations and draping
in white, which was in complete
harmony with with the costly white
casket was very artistic and beautiful.
The business men of Exira,
through the efforts of Mr. James F.
McAninch, ordered from Atlantic a
ten dollar beautiful floral piece representing
" The Gates Ajar." Other
elegant cut flowers were furnished
by the Lady Maecabees, of which
Maud's mother was a member, and
the graduating class of the High
School, and a number of other
friends. The remains were interred
in the Exira Cemetery.

Death was not an unexpected nor
an unwelcome guest. For some
time Maud had realized that the end
was near, and her thoughts had
been much upon heavenly things,
frequently conversing with her
mother and others upon this all
important subject, her soul's eternal
interest. Often was her heart
lifted in prayer for herself and those
that she loved. The mourning loved
ones have the sweet assurance
that bye and bye they can meet her
in that land so free from suffering
and sorrow, and while abiding here
below they have the promise of the
abiding pracence of their Heavenly
Father.
Always with, always with us;--
Words of cheer and words of love;
Thus the risen Savior whispers,
From His dwelling place above.
With us when we toil in sadness,
Sowing much and reaping none;
Telling us that in the future
Golden harvests shall be won.
With us when the storm is sweeping
O'er our pathway dark and drear;
Waking hope within our homes,
Stilling every anxious fear.
With us in the lonely valley,
When we cross the chilling stream;
Lighting up the steps to glory
With salvations radiant beam.

HALL OF THE LADIES OF THE MAC-
CABEES, Exira, Iowa, April 4, '99.
WHEREAS, God in his infinite
wisdom has called from this life to
the home above Maude E. Brown,
the beloved daughter of Lady Ina
Brown; therefore be it

Resolved, That we, the members
of Exira Hive, Number Nine, Ladies
of the Maccabees, hereby express
our heartfelt sympathy for her in
this her sad bereavement; be it

Resolved, That a copy of these
resolutions be spread upon the records
of this Lodge, a copy presented
to the family of our sorrowing Sister,
and another copy printed in
The Audubon County Journal.
