EXIRA DEPARTMENT

Next Monday the wagons will pull
out for the far south-west and these
parties will be in them: Mr. and
Mrs. Dellie Poage, Jay and Alice,
Mrs. Jay Whitney and son Leonard,
Mr. G. T. Poage, Mr. J. B. Connrardy,
daughter Kittie and sons Walter
and Jack. They expect to be gone
about four months and are anticipating
a pleasant jaunt. Mrs. John
Connrardy will join the party at
Denver and then go overland for
her health.

EXIRA DEPARTMENT

Since his return home Walter
Connrardy has been a very sick lad,
requiring the watchful care of Doctor
John Riley.

Walter Connrardy arrived from
his jaunt in the far west, Monday
evening, and says his father and
Jack will probably reach Exira in
time to celebrate. Uncle G.T. Poage
and his son, Dellie, will, most likely,
locate in Southern Kansas. A
letter says Uncle Poage has about
recovered from his recent accident.

OBITUARY

Again the death Angel has visited
our midst and taken from among
us one who, only a few weeks ago,
gave promise of a long life.

J. Walter Connrardy was a young
man who was born and had grown
up in Audubon county, most of his
life having been passed in Exira.
Sometime in the latter part of April
he started with his father and grandparents
to make an extended trip
through the west and look up a location
for future business. All seemed
well until sometime in June, and
while in the mountains of Wyoming
he was taken with mountain
fever and gradually grew worse
till it seemed he must return home,
which he did, arriving in Exira on
June 26th. From the time of his
arrival it was evident that he was a
very sick man, and only a very
strong constitution could withstand
the shock. He made a brave fight
for life, but the disease had taken
such strong hold that in the early
morn of July Fourth his spirit went
out to that bourne from whence no
traveler has yet returned.

His death came so suddenly that
his wife, who was in Kansas, and
and his brother, who was in Northwestern
Nebraska, could not be
with him in his last hours. However
Mrs. Connrardy arrived to-day
and also his brother, Jack. His
father. Mr. John B. Connrardy had
arrived home on the morning of
Monday. Walter had a large circle
of young friends and many were
the sad hearts as the news spread
on July Fourth that Walter had
passed away. Thus, in the morning
of life, was he stricken down, when
life was just opening up to its
sterner realities his carreer ends.
The sympathies of this whole town
and community go out to Mr. and
Mrs. Connrardy in their sad bereavement,
and to the sisters and brother.
And especially do they sorrow
with the young wife, so soon left
alone with the responsibilities of
life resting upon her. Walter Connrardy
was born Dec. 23, 1879, died
July Fourth, 1899, age 19 years, 6
months and 11 days.

The funeral was held today from
the family home in Exira, Rev.
Wissler of the Congregational
church officiating. Mrs. Carmichael
Mrs. George Henshaw, Edwin Delahoyde
and Peter Thielen gave the
music. May He, who doeth all
things well, bring comfort to these
sad hearts.

NEWS OF HAMLIN

Mrs. George Smith was called to
Exira last Monday, on a sorrowful
misson. A message said that her
brother, Walter Connrardy, was very
ill and she arrived at his bedside in
time to see him breathe his last,
which he did Tuesday morning.
Those at his bedside say they never
saw a more heroic light for life, nor
any mortal die in more agony.

friends for their many acts performed
and assistance rendered and the
words of sympathy spoken during
the illness and death of our dear
and muchly beloved Walter
son, husband and brother. When
