Clarence Elwood Dies after
A Few Days Illness with
Blood Poisoning-------
The death of Clarence Elwood
occurred at his home south of town
Sunday morning at eight o'clock
after a few days' illness with blood
poisoning caused by a boil on his
forehead.The deceased was a son of Mr.
and Mrs. T. J. Elwood, who own
and reside on a large farm near
Exira. He was born in this county
Dec. 9th, 1893 and has made
his home here all his life. He was
the youngest child of a family of
seven and has, in recent years, assisted
his father and two brothers,
Tom and Willis, in carrying on the
work on the farm.Clarence was a fine specimen of
young manhood and his death has
cast a gloom over the city. He
was very popular with the young
people here, all of whom will
miss him.He entered the service September
6th, 1918, and during his stay
in the army was stationed at Camp
Dodge with the 19th Division Supply
Train. He received his honorable
discharge February 13, 1919,
when he returned to his home here.
He was a member of the American
Legion, the Knights of Pythians,
Yeoman and Elk lodges, the latter
of which he joined about three
months ago.He is survived by his father,
mother, four brothers and two sisters,
Merlin and George of Prescott,
Iowa; Tom, Willis and Mrs.
Retta Hockenberry of Exira; and
Mrs. Barney Mertes of Adair. He
also leaves a half-sister, Mrs. L. V.
Hayes of Denver, Colorado; and a
half-brother, Elmer Cragan, of
Prairie City, Iowa. All are present
to attend the funeral.Military funeral services are
being held this afternoon at the
Christian church, conducted by
Rev. Lawton. Interment will be

Merlin and George Elwood of
Prescott, Iowa, Mrs. Barney Martes
of Adair and Elmer Cragan of
Prairie City, Iowa, returned to their
homes, Thursday last, after attending
the funeral of their brother,
Clarence Elwood. A half-sister,
Mrs. L. V. Hayes returned Monday
to her home in Denver, Colorado.-------

In Memoriam

The remorseless hand of death
hath again entered our lodge, and
our beloved brother, Clarence McKinley
Elwood, was called to the
Great Beyond on Nov. 21, 1920.Therefore, be it resolved, by Exira
Lodge No. 181, Knights of Pythias
of Iowa, that in the death of
our Brother Elwood, the fraternity
has suffered an irreparable loss and
this community has been deprived
of a good and useful citizen, and
our country of one of its worthy
defenders. One who commanded
our highest esteem and confidence
by his upright and sterling character,
frankness and fearlessness in
the cause of justice and right.Resolved: That we extend to
the bereaved family our heartfelt
sympathy in their great loss and
sorrow.Be it further resolved: That in
commemoration of our bereavement,
our castle hall be appropriately
draped in mourning, that
these resolutions be spread upon
the records of our lodge; that a
copy of same be published in the
Audubon County Journal and that
a copy be engrossed and be presented
to the family of our deceased
brother Knight.
