Commencement Exercises Very Successful.
Skillfully Arranged. Closing
A Profitable School Year.
All Worked In Harmony.

Last Thursday evening June 1, '11,
was one long to be remembered by
the good people of Exira. At an early
hour the people began to gather at
the Christian Church to listen to the
exercises prepared for their special
entertainment. Rev. John Harned of
the M. E. Church opened the exercises
by prayer, followed by a Class
March "Toreador" by Bizet by Miss
Bessie Witthauer. The graduating
class marching in to the music were
Ethel I. Bisom, Frank H. Hall,
Deana E. Hensley, Flora B. Houston,
Ellowene Dimick, Winnie I. Heath,
Ora B. Hicks, Clara G. Powell, Mur-
iel M. Koob. After the Invocation by
Rev. Harned, a song "Sweet Twilight
Hour" by Geibel was rendered by the
Class Trio, Ethel Bisom, Ellowene
Dimick and Deana Hensley. This
song brought forth much applause,
and paved the way for a fine oration
entitled "Grapes of Gold" by Mr. H.
V. Adams of the Chautauqua Manager's
Association of Chicago. The
speaker indulged in a rather laughable
introduction by taking a small
vial from his pocket and sprinkling
some of its contents over the front
part of the stage said he had found
that by sprinkling a little peppermint
over the floor before delivering a discourse
its aroma would impregnate
the air and cause it to be more healthy.
After a few seconds he said if
anyone smelled it raise your band.
A hand shot up which was soon followed
by others, when nearly the
whole crowd smelled that peppermint
The speaker then drifted into, and
delivered one of the finest lectures
ever heard here which held the crowds
attention for sometime. At its close
he spoke of the effects of imagination
over the body and then closed by saying
the peppermint scattered over the
floor was only in imagination; and
the laugh was on. Another song by
the same ladies "Row Us Swiftly"
was well received by the appreciative
audience. The Presentation of Diplomas
was conducted by the Prince of
Iowa Superintendents Prof. J. Lafferty
Harper, who applied a gilt etching
while handing them to the recipients.

Benediction by Rev. S. M. Smith
closed the exercises for one of the best
year's services ever held In the Exira
schools. The School Board and teachers
are all entitled to the highest
praise of pupils and patrons.
