Killed On the Rail Road

A sad accident happened on the Rock Island road at this place about 1 o'clock Monday morning, by which Harry Thomas lost his life. The freight train was switching some cars at the depot, and Mr. Thomas was acting as conductor of the train, standing on the end of the rear car. The train was cut in two and a number of the cars went back against the rear car, apparently without his knowledge, and when the approaching cars struck the one on which he was standing, he was thrown on the track, and the car wheels passed over one leg below the knee, crushing it, and partly crushing the other leg above the knee. He was brought to the Continental hotel where medical aid was summoned and everything possible was done to alleviate his suffering, but his injuries were of too serious a nature to admit of saving his life, and he died yesterday evening. He was given the conductorship of the train the day before his death, this being his first trip, over the road in that capacity, having formerly been brakeman on a passenger train. He is a single man, about 30 years of age, and resided at Trenton, Mo., where his remains were taken Tuesday morning for interment.
