James Peter Spence was the son of James Knox P. Spence (1844-1910) and Mary Ann Welch-Spence (1850-1926). He was born in Waukon, Allamakee County, Iowa on July 29, 1875. He died in Chewelah, Stevens County, Washington on February 24,1940.
James Peter Spence married Maude Mae Stolp (1881-1952) in Spokane County, Washington on October 7, 1905. She was the daughter of Meade Cordon Stolp (1852-1924) and Ida Jane Lucas (1859-1936).
James Peter and Maude Mae Spence are buried at Saint Mary of the Rosary Cemetery, in Chewelah with his parents James Knox P. and Mary Ann Spence.
James Peter spent his younger years in Union and Jefferson townships in Allamakee, where his father James Knox P. Spence, was engaged in agriculture on rented farms. James Peter was about twelve years old when his family relocated to Chewelah, Stevens County, Washington.
James Knox P. Spence’s, homestead according to the, “History of North Washington,” 1904, consisted of a good residence, three barns, other buildings, and considerable livestock. James Peter not only worked on the family farm but attended the local schools. As an enterprising young man in Chewelah, he ventured into the timber and lumber trade.
Maude’s father Meade Cordon Stolp, an early settler in the area, owned a lumber business. James became friends with the Stolp family from their business dealings before he married Maude.
James Peter and Maude owned a farm on United Cooper Road, where they raised their three children:
