Keep your hands to yourself?

In 1905, the Courier reported a Leon (Iowa) woman was awarded $375 against a man who forcibly hugged and kissed her against her will.

The woman was a popular belle and her suitor was a prosperous young farmer. Lucky for both, they weren't married. If they's married and filed for divorce, their "dirty linen" would have been aired in court.

Plaintiffs were required to file bills of complaints. In a 1907 Courier, for example, people read about the miserable marriages of four couples.

• One woman said that "for some time before her husband deserted her and her children he did not give her a kind word. She says he was morose and sullen: that he refused her money; that for a week at a time he would become angry and refuse to speak to her; and that he refused to take her into society." She asked for a divorce, custody of two children, ages 15 months old and 11, and $20 a month as alimony

• A second woman alleged her husband failed to provide for her as her station of life demanded, and she was obligated to earn money to "secure the necessities of life."

• In another Courier article, a man filed for divorce from his wife because she's "taken up with the Christian Scientists," and spent his money on new gowns to socialize with her new friends. Also, supper wasn't on the table when he got home each night after work.

• In the mid 1900's some Des Moines attorneys banded together and began refusing divorce cases. They gave several reasons: some were opposed to the "evil" of divorce; others found it distasteful to be involved in "racy matters" that usually accompanied such litigation; but mostly, attorneys didn't make much money for their efforts.
