The Iowa Griot

The following information is taken from The Iowa Griot, a newsletter of the African American Historical Museum and Cultural Center of Iowa.
My introduction to The Iowa Griot came from a meeting which I attended at the NorthEast Iowa Genealogical Society. The guest speaker, Joseph McGill, was giving an account into the Black History of the Civil War. It was quite interesting and informative, which gave me a greater appreciation of the history of the Black soldier.What is a griot? A griot [pronounced gree-oh] is the member of the group which keeps the history. The griot knows where the group has been, and thus where it is going. The Iowa Griot, in the tradition of the African Griot, endeavors to keep our history alive, so that, by knowing our past, we will make our future better.
