S. W. Whiteis Passes Away
Samuel W. Whiteis
Was President of Urbana Savings Bank and Prominent Citizen of Benton Co.
Samuel W. Whiteis, president of the Urbana Savings Bank and postmaster at that place, died suddenly at the home of his mother Thursday evening at 10 o’clock, from an acute attack of stomach trouble. Mr. Whiteis was born in Urbana February 12, 1866, his parents being among the most prominent and honored pioneers of Benton county. He is survived by his mother, one brother, Dr. Whiteis of the University of Iowa, and one sister, Mrs Albert, wife of Prof. Albert, also of the State University.
Mr. Whiteis was a prosperous, capable business man, public spirited and interested in everything that made for the upbuilding of the community. He was never active politically, however, the only office he ever held being that of member of the local board of education. He had never married, but had made his home with his mother, to whom he was greatly devoted. Aside from his banking interests Mr. Whiteis was the owner of a large amount of fine Benton county land and was one of the heaviest taxpayers and best known and respected citizens of the county. His sudden death brings sadness to a large circle of friends.
The funeral services were held at the residence Sunday morning at 11 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Martin, of the Methodist church and Rev. Stewart of the Christian church. It was attended by a large number of friends of the deceased who were present to pay their last respects to the dead. It is estimated that there were fully three hundred people in the yard who were unable to find a place in the house. Burial was made in the Urbana cemetery.
