Charles G. Turner
C. G. Turner, the oldest inhabitant nt Watkins, died at his home last Monday, aged 93 years. His was the first family to locate in that part of Benton county. He was for fifty years a justice of the peace and up to the time of his death was able to perform the duties of that position.

Death of Aged Mother

On Thursday afternoon of last week Mrs. William Turner passed way at the home of her son Ralph Clell Turner, in this city after about a week's illness. Up to a week ago she had been enjoying good health, and on March 15 had observed her 75th birthday with a big family dinner. A cold which developed into pneumonia was the immediate cause of her death.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:30 at the Pratt Creek United Presbyterian church and interment was made in the cemetery near the church.
Margaret Ewing was born March 15, 1838, in Indiana, and died April 3, 1913, at 2 o'clock p.m. in Vinton, Iowa. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1844, settling at Morning Sun. On December 20, 1859, she was married to Wm. Turner and they came to Vinton, Iowa, March 12, 1861. They were the parents of twelve children, six of whom, with the husband and father preceded the mother in death. The six who are left to mourn a loving mother's care are: Mrs. Maud Woodruff, Columbus Junction; Mrs. Willie Annie Kearns, of Vinton; Mrs. Emiline Waws (Daws) of LaPorte City; Mrs. Hattie Baldridge of Brookings, S.D.; Hugh A. Turner, of Anamosa, and Ralph C. Turner, of Vinton. She is also survived by one brother William Ewing, of Marshalltown.
Mrs. Turner joined the U.P. church in 1844 and lived that christian life she espoused in her youth. The good Lord was called to her home to reap the rewards of her labors. At the time of her death she was 75 years and 20 days old.

She was born Dec.7,1946 in Vinton, a daughter of W.S. and Imajean Franklin Turner
Surviving are her father of Kansas; her mother, Imajean Smalley of Wyoming, Iowa: four sisters, Mrs. Mike(Sandra) Cox of Urbana,Mrs. Harold(Cheryl)Knaack of Marion,Mrs. Craig(Betty) Milroy of Iowa City and Patty Sue Powers of Wyoming;five brothers Gary Turner of Herman, Ky.,Roger Powers,Robin Powers of Daytona,Fla.Mark and Bob Smalley of Wyoming

William Turner
William Turner
William Turner was born June 4, 1840, in Belmont,county, Ohio. He came west in 1856. His marriage to Miss Margaret Ewing occurred December 29, 1859. They moved to Benton County in 1861 and have resided here ever since.
Mr. Turner enlisted in Co. G. 13th Iowa Volunteers, in 1863 and remained with his company until the close of the war in 1865. He was a member of the G.A.R. Coder Post.
Mr. and Mrs. Turner lived on the home farm 17 years and then moved to Vinton where they have lived for the last year and half.
They were blessed with a family of 12 children. Six of these have proceded their father to the better land. The six children left to mourn with the loving and affectionate mother are: Mrs. Mary Woodruff, Columbus Junction; Mrs. William A. Kearns, Vinton; Mrs. Emeline Dawes, LaPorte; Mrs Hattie Baldridge, Vinton; Hugh A. Turner, Anamosa; Ralph C. Turner.
The relgious views of Mr. Turner were expressed by the United Presyterian church of which he was an exemplary and consistent member for forty years. He was a careful student of the bible,devoted worker for the Master, and one held in high esteem by all his friends and accquaintances. He was a noble man of God one who was faithful unto death. Only a little while before his death, he conducted worship at the family altar. His life was a blessing to all. Now he is enjoying the blessings of his heavenly reward.
Brief services were held at his late resident at 12:30 p.m. last Tuesday, conducted by his pastor Rev. McLane and Dr. Hilscher after which the remains were taken to the Pratt Creek Church for the funeral services. These excercises were conducted by his pastor with the assistance of Rev. A.B. Elliott of this city.
The body was laid to rest in the Pratt Creek cemetery to await the coming glory of the resurrection.
