Henry Thomas dies at age 103

NORWAY-Henry Thomas, 103, Norway's oldest resident, died Wednesday afternoon in a Cedar Rapids hospital following a short illness.
He was born Aug. 27, 1866 near Norway, a son of Adam and Margaretha Thomas. He married Mary Fahnle in December, 1890 and they farmed southeast of Norway until moving to town in 1917. They observed their 60th wedding anniversary in 1950 and she died March 31, 1953. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Norway where he served as treasurer 38 years. He served on the Norway school board 30 years, including 25 years as treasurer.
He is survived by one son, Neal, of Hubbard; one daughter, Mrs. Linc (Esther) Tow of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Eldren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Norway, with the Rev. L.L. Muster officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Cemetery southeast of Norway.
Friends may call at the George Brosh residence after 1 p.m. Friday.

HOWARD GALE THOMAS JR. Howard Gale Thomas Jr., 48 of 915 Krumboltz Drive, Marion, died Friday, June 14, 1996, at his home following a short illness. Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 17, at Murdoch Funeral Home, Marion, by the Rev. Nick Longworth, Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Shellsburg. Surviors include his wife, Susan; a daughter, Michele Sue Thomas of Marion; a son Mikel Shane Thomas of Marion, a daughter-in-law, Julie Thomas of Arizona; his father and step-mother, Howard Sr,. and Dorothy Thomas of Marion; a sister, Debra Mather of Cedar Rapids, and four grandchildren, Andrew Michael Thomas, Lindsey Sue and Lucas Russell Schmidt, and Nikolas Mikel Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Louise Thomas; and a sister, Linda Rife.
He was born on August 9, 1947, in Cedar Rapids to Howard and Louise Cook Thomas. He married Susan Ann Miller on February 11, 1967, at Cedar Rapids. Howard was an engineer for the Cradic Railroad for twenty-three years. He was a member of United Transportation Union Local #228...

Mrs. Henry Thomas died at her home Tuesday, March 31 at 10 a.m., following a lingering illness. A paralytic stroke was the cause of death.
Mary Fahnle was born in Steinheim, Germany, Nov. 5, 1865 to George and Magdeline Fahnle. At the age of seven she came to Fairfax, Iowa, with her parents where they lived for a short time. The family then moved to the vicinity of Norway where she spent the remainder of her life. She was united in marriage to Henry Thomas Dec. 31, 1890 and they lived on a farm until 1917 when they moved to Norway. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas had observed their 62nd wedding anniversary in 1952.
Surviving are her husband, three children, Eldred of Norway, Neal of Hubbard and Mrs. Linc Tow of Cedar Rapids; also five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Lena Leonard, who lives in California.
Funeral services were conducted today (Thursay) April 2 at 2 p.m. from the Norway Methodist church of which she was a member, with the Rev. J. B. Ackman of Cedar Rapids officiating. Frank W. Robinson provided the music. Burial was in Linnwood cemetery.

Neal A. Thomas
NORWAY: Neal A. Thomas, 87, of Hubbard, and a former Norway resident, died in a Des Moines hospital, Feb. 2, following a heart attack.
Born near Norway to Henry and Mary Thomas, Sept. 23, 1893, he graduated from Norway high school in 1910, and attended ISU at Ames. He was married to Amelia Melberg Feb. 10, 1921. He served as assistant cashier at the First National Bank at Norway several years, later moving to Hubbard, where he owned and operated a general merchandise store.
Surviving are his wife, and three children: Mrs. Elmer (Eual Mae) Baumgarten of Hartley, Mrs. Foster (Madeline) Mason of Alden, and Allen of Coralville; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Linc Tow of Cedar Rapids.
