Another Pioneer Called in Death
Mrs. Carrie Shuck
Mrs. Carrie Shuck Died Saturday at age 80 Years
Mrs. Carrie Shuck, pioneer resident of the Blairstown community, died Saturday morning at 4. a.m. at the home of her son Grant Shuck. The deceased was the daughter of James and Juliett Sterling and was born near Rockford, Ill., Sept. 11, 1855.
She came to Iowa with her parents when eight months of age and the family located on the farm near Blairstown where she has spent her entire life with exception of a few years when she and Mr. Shuck resided in Blairstown. On Oct. 26, 1875 she united in marriage to James D. Shuck. To this union three children, two daughters and one son, were born. Mrs. Minnie Goss who died Nov. 11, 1919, Mrs. Hattie M. Traer of Grifffin, Georgia and Grant Shuck on the home farm. Her husband died May 22, 1922. There are also 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Frank Sterling of Yakima, Wash. Another brother died at the age of 15 years.
Mrs. Shuck was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church for many years. She was also a member of the Social Circle and of the Woman's Missonary Society. She has been in poor health for about eight years, and has lived with her son son and family who gave her the most tender and faithful care. Although she suffered greatly she was very cheerful and patient and leaves many friends to mourn her departure.
Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church in Blairstown Monday afternoon by Rev. J. C. B. Peck. Mrs. Geo. Edwards sang two beautiful solos accompanied by Mrs. J. F. Schoen. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill cemetery at Blairstown.

Passing Of Old Pioneer
James David Shuck
James David Shuck was born in Burk County Pennsylvania in 1850. He was one of ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. John Samuel and Sabine Shuck. He moved with his parents to Cedar County about the year 1865. He came to Blairstown about 50 years ago and engaged in the jewelry business. Later he engaged in farming and followed that until advancing years and ill health compelled him to retire from the farm.
With the exception of two or three years spent in Florida the entire 50 years has been spent in Blairstown and vicinity.
In 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Sterling. To this union two daughters and one son, Mrs. Minnie Mabel Goss, who preceded her father in death, Mrs. Hattie May Traer of Jacksonville, Florida and Grant Sterling Shuck, who resides on the home farm. Mrs. Traer and Grant with the wife and mother and two brothers Dr. L. M. Shuck of Lisbon and J. S. Shuck of Clarence, also 12 grand children are left to mourn their loss.
Mr. Shuck was a member of the Blairstown Presbyterian church thru all the years of his residence here was a member of the board and trustees and a member of the board of the church choir and gave lavishly of his splendid voice both for church and for most public occasions till he was unable to longer give of his strength. He was a man of righteous convictions and principle and unfailing faith and trust in God. Through the years of his invalidism he retained his interest in the affairs of the community. He loved a visit with old friends and was ever gracious to the new. He was ever ready with a joke even though the body suffered. He leaves behind many besides the family who will mourn the passing of their old friend. The funeral service was held in the home on Friday at one o'clock in charge of Rev. M. E. Krotzer, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Music was furnished by Mrs. G. L. Edwards, Mrs. O. B. Hayden, Messars. J. R. Cline and B. F. Paul. The pall bearers were: O. L. Radeke, Joe Stewart, Chas. Bruch, T. H. and Fred Weil and S. G. Frantz. . Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery.
