Death Takes Frank G. Ray at Iowa City (subheading) VINTON NEWS
Frank G Ray
Frank G. Ray, 83, president of the State Bank of Vinton and the Iowa Canning Co., a prominent resident of Vinton for 62 years, died Monday at 6:45 a. m. at the university hospital in Iowa City after a lingering illness. At his bedside were his son and daughter, E. K. Ray and wife of Boston, Mass., and Mrs. John Knapp of Boone.
Mr. Ray entered the university hospital two weeks ago for treatment and an operation after an extended period of ill health. Because of his weakened condition the operation was not performed.
The deceased had been identified with the business interests of Vinton since 1873. For 25 years he had been president of the State bank. Before his election to the presidency of the Iowa Canning Co., following the death of Dr. C. C. Griffin, Sr., Mr. Ray had been a director and secretary of the company.
On coming to Vinton more than 60 years ago from Illinois, Mr. Ray engaged in the coal and farm implement business in the building now occupied by Mackie & Mackie. In 1909 he retired from this business to devote all his time to his growing banking and canning company interests.
A son of Guy and Louisa Ray, Frank G. Ray was born Dec. 31, 1851 in Whiteside county, Ill. He was educated in the public schools and attended Oberlin college in Ohio. His marriage to Miss Emma Whiteside of Pomeroy, Ohio., a teacher in the Vinton public schools, occurred in September, 1876. Mrs. Ray died on Dec. 27, 1933.
Two children survive -- E. K. Ray of Boston, Mass., and Mrs. John Knapp of Boone, Ia. There is one grandchild, Mrs. Emma Janet Roseman of Boston. And two great grandchildren, the son and daughter of Mrs. Roseman. Mrs. Isadore Shaw of Vinton is a sister of the deceased.
