Funeral of Eugene Pettit
Eugene Pettit
The funeral of the late Eugene Pettit was held last Saturday at the family home in west Vinton, conducted by Rev. Goff of the Christian Church, and the burial was in the cemetery north of the river.. Mr. Pettit was 67 years of age and was born in Indiana. He had lived in Vinton about 30 years and for the few years operated the West Side grocery with his son. He was survived by his wife, five children, three brothers and two sisters.

Eugene Pettit Breathes Last.. Proprietor of Grocery in the Gulf Passed Away Yesterday Morning. Sick Four Weeks.
Eugene Pettit
Following an illness extending over a period of four weeks Eugene Pettit who for thirty years had resided in this city, passed away yesterday morning at 5:30 o'clock. Death was due to a complication of diseases.
Mr. Pettit was born in Indiana and was 67 years, 5 months and 8 days old at the time of his death. He came to Vinton about thirty years ago from Missouri and for the past ten years had been associated with his son, L.J. Pettit in operating a small grocery on west 3rd Street.
The wife and five children mourn the passing of the husband and father. The children are Mrs. Stella Pettit of Missouri, Mrs. Kilmer of Clark, South Dakota, Ernest Pettit and Mrs. Alice Ahanger of Galesburg, Illinois and L. J. Pettit of this city. There are three brothers and two sisters surviving.

Death of Mrs. Pettit
Mary Angeline Pettit
Mrs. Mary Angeline Pettit, widow of the late Gene Pettit, died early yesterday morning at her home in west Vinton. Mrs. Pettit was born Dec. 19, 1849, in Indiana, but spent most of her life in and near Vinton. Mr. Pettit died about two years ago and the mother is survived by several children: They are Dudley, of Vinton, Ernest and Mrs. Alice Ahenger of Galesburg, Illinois, Mrs. Kilmer of Clark, South Dakota, Mrs. Stella Pettit, of Sanberry, Mo., also a sister of Albia, Iowa and two brothers at Cedar Rapids. One grandson Clarence Arlington, of Galesburg, Illinois, has been here sometime.
The funeral of Mrs. Pettit will probably be held sometime tomorrow and the burial at the Petitt burial ground northeast of Vinton.

SHELLSBURG: Woodrow "Woody" Pettit, Sr. age 94, died January 5, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St, in Vinton with Rev. Loel Fink officiating. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg.
Woody was born October 14, 1913 at Esterville to Joseph T. and Rhoda Alice (Burkart) Pettit. On May 5, 1939 he married Helen Lint at Cedar Rapids and she preceded him in death on September 15, 2002.
Woody was employed at Iowa Steel & Iron Works in Cedar Rapids from 1943 until his retirement on November 1, 1978. He was a member of Harvest Four Square Gospel Church in Vinton and the International Association of Machinists...
He is survived by his sons, Ivan (Linda) of Shellsburg, and Joseph (Margo) of Cedar Rapids; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Andrew (Hazel) of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Woodrow, Jr.; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; three brothers; and five sisters.
