Mr. George Nissen (1914 - 2010)
George Nissen

A trip to the circus in the 1930s inspired George Nissen to create the modern trampoline, an invention that eventually would lead to countless children and others doing back flips and tricks for fun and sport on the springy apparatus...

Mr. Nissen died of complications related to pneumonia April 7 at a San Diego hospital. He was 96...

George Nissen was born Feb. 3, 1914, in Blairstown, Iowa, to Franklin and Catherine Nissen. He grew up in Cedar Rapids and graduated from the University of Iowa, where he earned a degree in business. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was promoting his trampoline at a circus when he met his future wife, Annie, an acrobat from the Netherlands. They settled in Cedar Rapids, where he had his business. The couple moved to San Diego about 14 years ago to be closer to family.

Mr. Nissen is survived by his wife, Annie; two daughters, Dagmar Munn of Green Valley, Ariz., and Dian Nissen-Ramirez of San Diego; and one grandson.
