Jennie Newton
Vinton — Miss Jennie Newton, 80, Sunday at the Vinton home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. William Newton, after an illness of three and a half months; came to Benton county at the age of two with her late parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Newton: born Apr. 25, 1869, in Miflin county, Pennsylvania; lived on a farm in St. Clair township, later retiring to Blairstown; leaves two brothers, Dave Newton, Blairstown, and George Newton, Norway, and a sister, Mrs. Lent McNie, Norway; preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters; had made her home in Vinton the last year; funeral was Wednesday.

WIDOW OF WAR VETERAN DIES AT SHELLSBURG

Lucy M. Newton
SHELLSBURG, Dec 17 Following a brief illness due to the infirmities of old age and complications. Mrs. Lucy M. Newton, 85 years old, the widow of two Civil war veterans, died Friday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Fish of Shellsburg. Funeral will be held in the Federated church her Monday at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in the local cemetery.
Mrs. Newton a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Selesta Freeman, was born Sept. 21, 1847, in Illinois. She came to Iowa with her parents, the family locating in Tama County. She was married in the county to Wm. Nance, a soldier in the Civil war. To this union one son was born. Wm. Nance, deceased, her husband died in a southern prison during the war.
Some years later Mrs. Nance was married to Isaac Newton also a Civil war veteran. Eigth children were born to them, four sons and four daughters. One son died in infancy and the daughter Emma of the age of 21 years. Mrs. Newton was a member of the Oak Grove church near here and of Serman Circle G.A.R. Children survived the mother are: Mrs. Geo. Fish, who cared for the aged woman the last ten years; Fred Newton and Mrs. Frank Broom of Shellsburg; Ephraim Newton and Charlie Newton of Muscatine and Mrs. C. W Knox of Lonia, Iowa.

William Newton
Vinton - William Newton, 65, retired Vinton farmer, Saturday at his home here following a five years' illness; born at Watkins, Ia., Dec. 1, 1880, to William and Jane Newton: he married Pearl Park at Fairfax Sept. 2, 1909; farmed in the Watkins community prior to his marriage; in 1910 be moved with his wife to their farm in the Pratt Creek community: where they resided until 1944. when Mr. Newton's poor health forced retirement: member of the Pratt Creek Presbyterian church and former president of the Mt. Auburn Mercantile board while residing in that community: leaves widow, a daughter, Mrs. Dorothea Wittmer, Chicago; a son Wallace, Vinton, and two brothers and sisters, David E. Newton and Jennie B. Newton, both of Blairstown, and George A. Newton and Lena McNee, both of Norway: four grandchildren; was preceded in death by his son, First Lt. Norman Newton, killed while fighting in France in March, 1944, and a brother and two sisters; funeral was here Monday.
