Blairstown Press; April 9, 1920
Ray Miller Laid to Rest
Ray B. Miller

The Blairstown Community Mourns Untimely Passing Of Promising Young Man.

A large concourse of sorrowing friends gathered at the M. E. church on Wed., March 31, at 1:30 o’clock to pay tribute to one of our promising young men, Ray B Miller, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Miller, whose death occurred at their home in Cedar Rapids the proceeding Monday. He was educated in the public schools here, supplemented by a course in the Cedar Rapids Business college, which he had completed the Thursday proceeding his illness and was happily making preparations to return to his farm and start operation of the spring work, he having chosen farming for his lifes’ work. With everything in his favor endowed with health and the ability and inclination for work, he would have gone on the road to success, always a favorite with those who knew him best and popular among the younger set. He was a lover of music and was a member of the Blairstown band.

The services were in charge of Rev. J. S. Westfall of Ackley, former pastor, assisted by Rev. C. S. Burnard. Music was furnished by Mrs. C. A. Black, Miss Lydia Groff, B. F. Paul, J. R. Cline and Mary Ransom. The pall bearers were eight young men:.

The Messrs. Geo. Hameister, Walter Curtis, Wm. Mecklenberg, Clelland Waychoff, Henry and Art Siek, Wilson Pingrey and James May.

Tre floral offerings were beautiful. He was laid to rest in the family lot in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Among those who attended from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Ardo Rank, Mr. and Mrs Moody Rank of Des Moines, Walter Grace of Watkins, Mrs. Donahue of Chicago, Arnold and Eddie Garnelius of Van Horn.

The following was Whitten by Rev. J. S. Westfall:.

Ray Benton Miller was born in Gaines, Mo., December 2, 1900 two years later he, with his parents went to Idaho from where he came to Blairstown, about ten years ago, which continued to be his home until early Monday morning March 29, when in response to his Heavenly Father's call he passed into the realms of the great beyond at the age of 19 years, 3 months and 21 days. His illness tho short was critical from the first. The best medical aid to be had was called to attend him. A specialist from Chicago was called in consultation. A trained nurse was constantly at his side to minister to his needs. The bereaved family watched and prayed. All that human agencies could do was done but all of no avail, for God had planned it otherwise. His earthly day was done.

His heart broken Father and mother also his cousin, Mary Ellen, who is one of the family are joined by a large circle of friends in mourning his seemingly untimely death.

Ray as we knew him embraced the Christian religion early in life and his faith in the same sustained him thru the bitter hour of pain. It was about three years ago that the writer had the privilege of administering to him the ordinance of baptism and receiving him into the fellowship of the M. E. church at this place of which he remained a member, until he was called to that church pure and without fault, that Christ has prepared for all who serve him and do his will.
